The Detox Market

The Detox Market, San Francisco

On my recent trip to San Francisco, I knew I had to visit the Detox Market at 969 Valencia Street. I’ve been mentally shopping at their website for awhile. Their goal is to search the world to find the best natural, non-toxic, effective products around. And, great news, they definitely delivered! The carry teas, skincare, makeup, chocolate, books, aromatherapy, baby products, perfume, hair care, soap, jewellery and supplements—the selection and the quality of the products were sublime.

Detox Market San FranciscoWhen I walked in the store, the manager, Aurore, was busy giving a makeover but still took the time to greet me and offer help with questions I had. The first thing I noticed was the array of teas by Kusmi, a pesticide-free brand with a variety of invigorating blends. I wanted to try them all but I decided to buy the Kusmi Detox Tea. The detox tea is a blend of mate and green tea, flavored with lemon and lemongrass. It comes by the bag or loose. It’s a great tasting green tea—I’m actually brewing a cup right now! I also picked up some Sugar Destroyer Matcha tea.  It is a blend of matcha powdered green tea and gymnema sylvestre—an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine to control blood sugar and promote weight loss. It’s a smooth tea with a beautiful flavour, not bitter at all.

I picked up Urban Moonshine Citrus Bitters in a very cool, very convenient, spray that you can use after you eat— it’s perfect for traveling. Bitters are great for aiding digestion, supporting liver function, enzyme support, and are pre-biotic!

In another aisle, I noticed Detox Market carries one of my absolutely favorite supplement brands—HealthForce. They have premade detox kits and you can also buy each product separately. I picked up some Scram. It’s a product that I’d never seen before but it looked great. It’s anti-microbe, anti-fungal, anti-yeast, anti-bacterial, anti-acne—I like that! It’s a mixture of cloves, black walnut hull, wormwood herb, and milk thistle extract.

I was on a mission to find Stratus 902 Stratus Skin Perfector by Vapour. It’s like a skin primer but without the pore clogging silicone and other damaging ingredients most primers have. It is a 3-in-1 moisturizer, primer, and no-colour foundation. Here’s how the Detox Market website describes it:  “Made with 70% Certified Organic ingredients and 30% natural mineral pigments & vitamins. Stratus nourishes skin with Organic Pumpkin and Papaya complex, essential fatty acid rich Organic Evening Primrose, essential amino acid Lysine and skin supportive silica. Stratus is infused with Vapour’s face specific infusion of anti-inflammatory Frankincense, antioxidant Tulsi and moisturizing Lotus flowers.” How awesome is that? I scooped it up and brought it home. I love this stuff! I’ve been using it every single day because it gives my skin a subtle glow and radiant sheen.

One thing I didn’t plan on picking up (but couldn’t resist) was the Discovery Kit  by Odacité. It’s a sampler kit of their freshly made, aloe vera based, chemical/preservative-free skincare line. The kit has everything I needed to get started with a cleanser, toner, day cream, night cream, hydrating mask, and jojoba exfoliating beads. I am very particular about my skincare, and didn’t want to commit to the full sized products without knowing both how I felt and how my skin was going to react to the products. This line of skincare products is beautiful, there’s no other word to describe it. The cleanser gets every last bit of dirt out, the jojoba bead scrub is gentle yet effective, and the day and night creams made my skin so soft. I certainly will be buying the full sizes online. I would recommend it to almost anyone. Just be careful if you have oily skin, I found the product very rich. They may have other choices for different skin types.

Those were my treasured finds at the Detox Market. Oh yeah, I also bought a lipstick by Ilia that’s made of essential oils and doubles as a lip conditioner. It’s very sheer but the color deepens as you reapply. I also picked up a  Hurraw all-natural organic vegan coconut lip balm infused with real vanilla beans. It smells good enough to eat but I probably shouldn’t. 😉

I can’t wait to go back but in the meantime, I’ll definitely have to order online. Not quite as much fun as a visit to the bricks and mortar store but at least I’ll be able to replenish my trove of Detox Market treasures.
