My Interview with Amanda Beisel – SKN Clinic

SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic
Amanda Beisel is the founder of SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic.   Lets talk about this amazing clinic for a second, my first treatment there was skin needling and from the moment I spoke with Amanda I knew I was in the right place.  She is full of insight and knowledge when it comes to everything skincare related, not to mention she has gorgeous skin as you can see from her picture.

The genius of SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic lies in philosophy Amanda created behind it – “Rooted in Eastern Medicine, the treatments at SKN combine advanced technology and skin nutrition with the wisdom and proven techniques of eastern medicine. Merging the western world of modern science with the traditional eastern world of alternative medicine provides SKN with enormous scope and opportunity.  SKN continuously researches the latest in skin health and nutrition to provide its clientele with the most effective and innovative treatments.  From Cosmetic Acupuncture to Vitamin Infusion Peels”

As such, I decided to interview her and gather her expert opinion and advice on everything from skin needling and acupuncture to chinese herbs!

Can you tell us a little about yourself and SKN Clinic?

I am a licensed acupuncturist specializing in cosmetic acupuncture and medical skin needling. I love to create new things that will help enhance the look and health of peoples skin.   SKN Clinic was my first creation and I always refer to it as my child.  I nourish it and constantly look for ways to help it grow and flourish.  I wanted SKN Clinic to be a place people could come to not only look better but to also feel really great when they leave.  I wanted the environment to be casual and comfortable but staffed with the smartest, most talented practitioners Vancouver has to offer.  My most recent product launch is the SKN Spin Roller System and After Glow Oil Replenishing Serum.  We are excited to be going to Hollywood at the end of September to feature SKN Spin and AfterGlow in the VIP Gift Lounge in the W Hotel for the Emmy Awards.

What do you think are the keys to glowing, radiant skin?

I think using really good quality products is so important .  It is what you are doing each and every day to your skin that really matters most.  Finding a good cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin.  Using appropriate serums to work on the deeper layer of skin where all the collagen and elastin is.  This includes serums containing hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, vitamin C and other potent antioxidants.  Using a good skin oil if you have normal to dry skin can greatly improve the appearance of your skin.  Find an oil that contains what your skin barrier needs and can penetrate the skin.  This is why I created After Glow because I wanted an oil that constantly restored and repaired my barrier and left my skin looking silky as opposed to oily (this is due to the lecithin in the product).  Lastly a good moisturizer and a zinc based sunblock.
How do you keep your skin looking so beautiful?

Thank you for calling my skin beautiful. 😉   I use a host of products that include:  Hyaluronic Serum by Rhonda Allison,  Catalyst by Osmosis,  Vitamin C powder by Osmosis,  After Glow by SKN Spin,  Radiance Moisturizer by Jade, Coola Zinc Sunblock and at night I use Correct Vitamin A Serum by Osmosis.   I roll with the SKN Spin once a week and do an light enzyme mask called Polish by Osmosis once a week too.   As for treatments I do  Medi-Facial or a Peel once a month,  Every 3 months I do either Medical skin needling or Skin Tyte.

What can you tell us about skin needling?  What kind of results have you seen?  Are there any risks?  Does it hurt?

There are two types of Skin Needling.  One is called Medical and that uses longer rollers ranging in size from 1mm-2mm and is performed in a clinic.   It is a great treatment with a host of benefits.  One of the main things clients have noticed is that is firms the skin and improves the overall texture of the skin.  It is great for improving the appearance of indented scars from acne, and chicken pox.

Some of the key benefits of Medical Skin Needling:

  • ·         Stimulate the production of collagen tightening the skin
  • ·         Eliminate or reduce crows feet and lip lines
  • ·         Eliminate or reduce forehead lines and frown lines
  • ·         Assist in the absorption of cosmetic products
  • ·         Reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation and sun damage
  • ·         Treat acne scars and chicken pock scars
  • ·         Reduce the appearance of scarring and stretch marks
  • ·         Reduce the appearance of enlarged pores

The next type of skin needling is called cosmetic needling and it is performed at home.  The SKN Spin is a cosmetic roller that clients use once a week at home to keep their skin looking great.  One of the main things clients report is softer texture of skin, reduced appearance of large pores and crow’s feet.  Clients really notice their skin glows and become addicted to there roller.  The SKN Spin is an awesome exfoliation tool that effectively removes the drab top layer of skin revealing a fresh new layer.  Clients can experience dryness a couple days after rolling because the dead layer is peeling off.  This is not visible to the naked eye.  Using After Glow after rolling is highly recommended to help with the dryness.

The risk are very low.  We have had no negative side effects reported.

It is slightly uncomfortable to roll with the SKN Spin.  We have clients who are sensitive and other clients who don’t think it hurts at all.  The most sensitive areas to roll are around the eyes, above the lip and the forehead.  It is definately tolerable and the results make it well worth it.  Also for medical skin needling the skin is number to reduce any discomfort.

What can you tell us about facial acupuncture?  What kind of results have you seen?  Are there any risks?  Does it hurt?

Facial acupuncture begins with a traditional body acupuncture treatment to balance the internal systems.  It is a really holistic treatment because you get both a health boost and balancing of the body plus a cosmetic treatment to improve the skin.  After the body needles are placed in the body then comes the needles placed in the face.  The needles in the face increase blood and oxygen flow up to the face and stimulate the wound healing response to tighten and tone the skin.  The skin looks healthy, and vibrant after a series of treatments.

The most common results I see are an improvement in the vibrancy of the skin.  It looks more alive and the eyes more awake.  It really breathes life back into the skin.  Clients also feel much calmer and more zen after having acupuncture.

The risks are very minimal.  The worst thing I have ever encountered is a bruise.  This happens about 20% of the time but fades away quickly.  The treatment is not painful but rather clients feel a slight poke and that is it.

I know you are a certified Chinese herbalist, what herbs would you recommend for anti-aging?

I carry a line of products by the Jade Spa Collection and it was created by a Doctor of Chinese medicine and a Dermatologist.  They products contain a host of Chinese herbs, jade stone and nourishing oils.  Some of the main herbs are ginseng, angelica root, peony and Huang qi.   Ginseng and Angelica Root are to strengthen, protect and rejuvenate the skin, while enhancing the immune function of dermal cells.   They have a moisturizer called Radiance and one called Firming and Lifting and they are the most beautiful moisturizers I have ever used.

What skincare lines and products do you think are most effective for anti-aging and glowing, radiant skin?

My favourite skincare lines are Osmosis Pur Medical, Jade, Rhonda Allison, SKN Spin and After Glow of course.  I think it is important to ensure that you are using vitamin A, Vitamin C, Antioxidants,  Hyaluronic acid, Copper Peptides and Amino Acids.  I really promote using a skin oil too.  It improves the overall look of the skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.   Finding a good moisturizer is key too.

As you know I am a total skin nerd and always researching ingredients and formulas.  I just finished formulating my second product with a chemist and it is just in its final testing stages to make sure the natural preservatives are stable so I should be launching it in the late fall.  It is a very high quality, potent antioxidant serum that also contains bio-fermented sea kelp.  SKN Spin, After Glow and the new serum are going to be the most powerful homecare treatment in existence.

Right now my top 5 products are:

1.Catalyst by Osmosis

2. AfterGlow by SKN Spin

3. Hyaluronic Serum by Rhonda Allison

4. SKN Spin Roller System

5. Radiance Moisturizer by Jade

What are your favorite foods?

I have a serious obsession with making my own kale chips right now using nutritional yeast, apple cider vinegar, and olive oil with a bit of sea salt.  I love portabella mushrooms.  My most favourite foods to go out and eat are Japanese (Minami and Miku are amazing) and Oysters at Rodneys.  I am trying my best to follow the diet of a gluten free and dairy free pescatarian.

Thank you Amanda!  Check out SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic.  If you are not in Vancouver, good news she has an online shop where you can check out all the fantastic products she recommended here!
