 BERRIES!

 I know, I was kicking myself too for not thinking of this one sooner.  Right now strawberries are in season, with summer looming close your grocery will be packed full of these little skin boosters.  You need to try to buy organic, I know the word brings out some outrage in people but I believe…  Strawberries are one of the most pesticide ridden foods you need to be careful, get them organic when you can or if you are lucky enough grow your own.  Berries have thin skins not like a pineapple or mango making these fruits more prone to absorb the chemicals.  Berries are always best used and eaten raw first,  freeze dried or just dried under very low temperatures :)

 So here’s why berries are so beneficial: a wide variety of these magical little treats, like blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and the not so common acai and maqui berries, contain antioxidants and anthocyanins. These act as microscopic superheroes when we introduce berries to our body’s. Think of it this way, things like ultraviolet light, air pollution, and even oxygen can damage your skin, and ‘stress’ it out. When your skin gets stressed, it pays you back by becoming oily, or dry, or blotchy, and it stays that way until it gets some TLC. Antioxidants and anthocyanins provide your skin with the loving it needs by kicking some free radical butt (the stuff that damages skin cells), and leaving behind lots of the good stuff that promotes happy, stress-free skin.  Don’t forget berries also contain skin loving vitamins like C, to help fight off wrinkles!

 As a result, berries have been shown to reduce the risk of skin wrinkling, decrease inflammation, and improve the overall look, and feel of your skin! TA-DA!

The best part of the benefits of berries is that the beauty ritual is a piece of cake! All you have to do is work whichever juicy treat you fancy, like a handful of blueberries, into your diet, and let the magic begin! You can even find things like Acai and maqui berries at your local health food store or of course Whole Foods.

In my opinion, face masks are a fantastically fun way to improve your beauty routine. So what better way to get your dose of nutrients than to smear some berries all over your face? From what I’ve heard, strawberries have been dubbed the best candidate for creating a face mask that will make your skin glow so bright that others will have to wear sunglasses in your presence.

 The easiest face mask, that will treat cases of oily skin, requires only some strawberries and something to mush them up with. Proceed to smear the mush all over your face, relax for the next fifteen or twenty minutes while the berries transform your skin, and then rinse it off with some warm water.

 Unfortunately, with berries like the maqui, you’ll only see real improvement if you actually eat them. It’s definitely worth it though! These little purple berries have been trusted by natives in South America for centuries and have more anthocyanins than raspberries and strawberries (about the same as blackberries and blueberries).
