Foods That Make Your Hair Grow

Food That Make Your Hair Grow

Helping Your Hair Grow One Bite at a Time

Food is one of the greatest gifts known to women, and I say that in all seriousness. Waiting for your hair to grow out can be frustrating. So, when I found out I can take the best thing in the world and make the worst thing in the world better, I was all about it. Sometimes it can seem as if your hair is growing at snail speed and when it does finally grow, it’s time for a trim. I have to say, I’ve been known to be a little crazy every time a stylist and scissors come anywhere near my hair.

Everyone’s hair grows about a ½ inch per month, and while your particular rate of growth is predetermined by age and genetics, there are some foods that can help you along the way.

Protein: hemps seeds, spirulina, maca, quinoa,

According to the experts, “each of the hairs on our scalp is composed of nature’s most powerful protein called Keratin.” A lack of protein can cause dry and brittle hair, which leads to breakage.

Essential Fatty Acids flaxseed, hemp seed oil, walnuts, pumpkin seed oil.

Essential Fatty Acids help to keep your hair and scalp hydrated. If you suffer from a dry scalp, like a lot of women do, this one is crucial, especially since there’s no polite way to scratch your head at the dinner table.  The only flaky thing at the table should be the buns…

Vitamins A&C: spinach, broccoli, kale, carrots, sweet potatoes

Vitamins A & C help to produce sebum. Sebum is “the oily substance secreted by your hair follicles, it’s the body’s natural hair conditioner,” says Hilary Parker. These specific foods also contain iron, which helps carry oxygen to blood cells, and therefore your scalp, keeping it healthy.

Silica: asparagus, white onions, bell peppers, cucumbers.

Silica helps the body absorb vitamins and minerals and is key to strong bones, glowing skin and healthy hair. It is best to eat these raw; cooking them reduces their nutritional value. I know this may not sound appetizing, but think of every bite as an inch closer to those long, luxurious locks.  You can make some great salads with these hair foods.

You can also find some of these nutrients added to your shampoos and conditioners. While this is helpful, I find the best way to get your vitamins and minerals is through the food you eat everyday. This helps you maintain your health, there’s no risk of the product being or becoming ineffective, it’s the least expensive, and last, but definitely not least, you have a great excuse for all the wonderful food you’re going to eat.

Now time to go grocery shopping for foods that make your hair grow!

Hyaluronic Acid Benefits

Hyaluronic Acid BenefitsHyaluronic Acid: Nature’s Wrinkle Cure?

We all have creams, masks, cleansers, and every possible thing you can think of to keep our skin looking young. I’ve been known to stand in the mirror for way too long, trying to figure out if I’m getting wrinkles. Somehow, I’ve become convinced that my face will dry up like a raisin at an early age, so in the name of prevention, I try every single facial product that comes my way. In my “studies,” I have found that taking care of my skin naturally works best for me. Sometimes, the results take a little longer, but my skin ends up looking beautiful, and I take comfort in knowing that there’s no risk of my eyes falling out in 30 years because of that new revolutionary wrinkle treatment I tried.

In comes, Hyaluronic Acid.

Hyaluronic Acid sounds like a harmful chemical, but it is not. It has actually been used for years in treating Osteoarthritis. According to the Arthritis Foundation, “The lubricating fluid of the joint, called synovial fluid, contains long chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The major GAG in the fluid is Hyaluronan. Hyaluronan contributes to the synovial fluid’s lubricating properties and also controls fluid flow into and out of the joint space.” As I understand it, Hyaluronic Acid is something that your body produces naturally and it aids in lubricating your joints.

Hyaluronic Acid or HA is reported to be extremely beneficial in beauty products; it has an innate ability to retain a large amount of water. An article written in Rejuvenation Science states that, “Hyaluronic Acid injections can be used to improve the skin’s contour and reduce depressions in the skin due to acne, scars, injury, or lines.”

Now, in reading this I thought “that’s all well and good but injections?” Needles are not my usually my friend. Luckily, there are many different ways to replenish your body with HA. You can get injections, use topical creams and serums, and take supplements. Hyaluronic Acid injections are used in arthritis patients and also used as a derma filler by many plastic surgeons. Many people who have used Hyaluronic supplements say they have noticed improvement in their joints, hair, and skin.  Your best bet to get the full benefits of hyaluronic acid is to take it internally (vitamin form) and use an external cream or serum.

As for the downsides or side effects of Hyaluronic Acid, they seem to be few and far between. There have been reports of swelling and redness with injections.  I could not find significant information on the long term effects, but that doesn’t mean they’re not there. The topical creams and serums are my top choice, but you still have to be selective in what you choose because some serums and creams don’t contain enough Hyaluronic Acid to be effective. The best ones seem to be Hyalogic Episilk PHA Serum and Peter Thomas Roth VIZ-1000. The Hyalogic serum contains only deionized water and Hyaluronic Acid, and the VIZ-1000 is 75% Hyaluronic Acid.

Hopefully, this fountain of youth proves to be what we are all looking for to keep our skin looking smooth and beautiful, but as with anything, talk with your doctor or dermatologist to make sure this is right for you, and to make sure that you’re eyes won’t fall out (just kidding). That last thing being of the utmost importance 😉

I notice the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid right away when I use a serum, my skin feels smoother and tighter.  When I take it internally my skin is softer with a bit of a glow from the extra moisture.

What is Skin Needling

what is skin needling Skin Needling: What is it and do you want it?

Before we all jump in line for the next new thing that supposedly makes us beautiful, let’s pause and take a look at what we are actually doing. When I first heard about skin needling, I was a tad weary, simply because you’re telling me that if I poke myself with a whole bunch of needles that might make my face bleed, I’ll look better. Call me crazy, but on first glance, I’ll stick to my masks and exfoliating scrubs.

Upon further research, it started not to sound so excruciatingly horrible, and by that I mean only moderately horrible. But anything that could possibly help with anti-aging could be worth a shot. So let’s begin with the basics, what is it?

Skin Needling is the process of using little tiny needles, the size of the needle depending on what you are using it for, to penetrate the skin. These tiny punctures promote new growth of collagen and elastin. According to Dr. Des Fernandes, one of the pioneers of Skin Needling or Percutaneous Collagen Induction, “Because the needle only penetrates through the epidermis and does not remove it, the epidermis is only cleft and will rapidly heal.” The way I understand it, the trauma caused to the skin by the punctures activates our skin’s natural healing process, without scarring our skin.

In a 2008 study, The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal concluded that “Percutaneous Collagen Induction has proved to be a simple and fast method for safely treating wrinkles and scars. As opposed to ablative laser treatments, the epidermis remains intact and is not damaged.” The study goes on to say that “on average, the patients in Germany rated their improvement between 60 and 80 percent better than before the treatment.”

The obvious advantage to skin needling is that it only requires approximately two days of recovery time, while Laser Resurfacing can require two weeks. It can diminish the appearance of wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, cellulite, lines, hair loss, and acne scars. Some disadvantages include: mild discomfort, redness of the skin, and minimal bleeding. Also, it is not recommended for keloidal scars. Be careful of over-aggressive needling, Dr. Fernandes says, “over-aggressive needling may cause scarring and potential hyper pigmentation.”

Another aspect of skin needling is that you can buy a Derma Roller and do it at home but the needles are not as agressive. Most of the products come with detailed instructions and are somewhat easy. The best rated one seems to be the Scientia Derma Roller, which costs around $90.

Kudos to anyone who can do this at home, but as for me this recipe might just equal disaster. I would much rather start with a doctor who specializes in skin needling to perform this procedure and show me how to do it at home. Getting it done professionally can range from $180 per hour to $300 per session. While this may seem expensive, it is relatively cheaper than laser resurfacing, which can cost upwards of $2000.

The possibilities with this treatment are definitely exciting and definitely worth further exploration, but, like with anything relatively new that promises beauty, make sure that it does not cause you or your skin unnecessary damage.  Now that you know what skin needling is are you going to try it?

Alpha Lipoic Acid is substance that works within the cells of the human body, recycling the waste products created within. This in turns generates cellular energy and improves the overall function and look of your skin.

Raw Food Diet Benefits

raw food diet benefitsFeeling Great and Looking Hot: Enhancing Beauty and Health with a Raw Food Diet

The Raw Food Diet: What it is and how it benefits your beauty.

A vegan raw food diet, gaining popularity in an increasingly health conscious society, really does do a body good, in more ways than one.  Aptly named, the diet consists of eating primarily raw foods, although some food may be heated to approximately 115 degrees Fahrenheit.  Both Vegans and voracious meat-eaters can benefit from this raw-food diet. With an amazing variety of food options and an endless supply of mouthwatering recipes, people from all walks of life can drastically change the way they think about food, while enhancing their outer beauty at the same time.  It’s not just boring salads!

One of the greatest advantages of a raw food diet is that the food’s nutritional value is not depleted in any way by overcooking.  For instance, the cooking process often reduces or eliminates essential enzymes and vitamins that would otherwise be found in food.  People enjoying a raw food diet can benefit from the full nutrient content of their meals, since they simply don’t cook any or most of their food!  They eat primarily unprocessed, natural, organic foods, including all raw vegetables and fruits, seaweeds, sprouts, nuts, seeds and pure juices.  Those who aren’t vegans will also eat eggs, unpasteurized dairy products, and certain meats but really you need to do this vegan. Foods that are considered unsafe to consume uncooked will either be avoided entirely or simply cooked to a safe level. (Many raw foodists only have a 75% raw diet!).

Raw Food Diet Beauty Benefits

Of course, the question remains: So what?  What’s the big deal with a few extra enzymes in our food?  Who really cares about increased vitamin content?  The truth is, we should all care!  A raw food diet, rich in those essential elements, can not only help prevent certain cancers, aid digestion, and increase your energy, but it can also do wonders for your appearance!  Want to lose weight and highlight your curves?  A raw food diet, which never leaves you hungry, is considered one of the most effective ways to shed pounds in a healthy way!

The majority of people on a raw food diet will consume less cholesterol and fat and more water and fiber.  Their metabolism will often increase as well, which again heightens potential for significant weight loss. How about having beautiful, radiant skin?  A raw food diet can do that for you, too. With the higher moisture content of most uncooked foods, combined with nutrients like vitamin E, selenium, and sulfur (which can help increase natural elasticity and boost collagen), your skin will become noticeably more youthful, healthy, and blemish-free.

Looking to change your life?  Consider going raw.  From a hot body to a flawless complexion to soft and touchable skin, a raw food diet is a great way to improve your health, inside and out.

Cheers to the benefits of raw food & radiant beauty!

Green Smoothies – A Beauty Secret

Green SmoothiesEat Greens To Stay Beautiful

When you were a child, I bet your mother often touted the importance of eating green vegetables.  Better vision and fewer trips to the doctor were common promises of adequate salad consumption.  When those health benefits failed to entice you, most desperate mothers would offer the standard, much more effective, incentive of dessert, and most kids cleaned their plate for a small serving of some sweet concoction. Now, however, hopefully you don’t need dessert to convince eat your  greens.

With so many health and beauty benefits of eating salad and other green vegetables, they’ve become my favorite part of every meal!  Try a green smoothie!

Many leafy greens, like romaine lettuce, kale, and spinach, have a number of essential antioxidants that are vital in maintaining health and making a marked difference in the way you look and feel.  These powerful vitamins and nutrients, which serve to strengthen bone, improve brain function, and help prevent cancer, can improve your health and vitality.  They can also directly impact your outer beauty, affecting skin, hair, and weight.

Specifically, the vitamin A found in most leafy greens can help keep your skin smooth and supple and it can work to prevent premature wrinkles. By aiding in the production of natural oil, it will help you retain skin moisture, which is not only a benefit to keeping your skin moisturized, but also to keeping your hair strong, smooth, and shiny.  Selenium, also found in many greens, can help give your skin and hair a healthy tone while preventing drying.  Vitamin E is another vitamin essential in keeping you moisturized and defending your skin against becoming too dry.  It also helps to fight acne and give you healthy, clear skin.  Vitamin B, which is thought to provide some natural protection against UV rays, can help ward off sun-damage and prevent premature wrinkles.

Eating leafy greens can also help you achieve your ideal figure.  Not only are they low in calories, but they aid digestion (which can reduce bloating) and are absorbed into the body more slowing, which can help minimize the effect on your blood sugar levels and therefore improve metabolism and help you feel full longer.

Getting your greens is an essential factor in beautiful skin, hair, and body, and they can actually be a delicious part of any meal.  Spend some time researching, trying, and perfecting the many ways to prepare your vegetables, keeping in mind that uncooked vegetables retain their vitamin content better than cooked ones. With so many delicious combinations and healthy dressings and sauces, there are no longer any excuses for leaving your vegetables on your plate.  So eat up! Your body will thank you.

Never tried a green smoothie before?   Just use your favourite smoothie recipe but add a couple of handfuls of spinach or kale, try to pick a mild green not a spicy one so you won’t even taste it.  Voila :)

Argan Oil For Your Hair & Skin

Argan Oil BenefitsArgan Oil Benefits

Promises, promises, promises! It seems that everywhere I look, I see the latest beauty products and manufactured fads promising better hair and more beautiful skin through some revolutionary new process. I can’t help but wonder why so many people are missing out on the actual organic benefits found in a natural product that has been around for centuries.

Argan Oil, harvested from the nuts of Argan trees, primarily in Morocco, is one of the most successful hair skin,  and body treatments I’ve found, both through research and through personal experience. In fact, it’s considered by many beauty aficionados to be a veritable miracle product, working wonders on your body. With its many uses, it can make a drastic difference in the health and appearance of your skin and hair, from the inside out.

Using Argan Oil for your skin is extremely effective because of its vitamin E, fatty acids, anti-oxidants, and squalene content. Together, these nutrients can help improve skin’s elasticity, reduce sun-damage, and increase moisture. Since Argan Oil is absorbed quickly and easily, even a few drops, applied once or twice a day, can make a noticeable, lasting difference. Used specifically as a facial moisturizer, it can rejuvenate your complexion and give you younger, healthier looking skin. It works to soften your skin, reduce blemishes, and even minimize the appearance of wrinkles! And it works on chapped lips, too; even the driest lisps can become supple and completely kissable again!

Argon Oil can also be used all over the body, to moisturize, smooth, firm, and strengthen skin, as well as protect it against the environmental elements. Regular use not only prevents skin dehydration, but also helps reduce the extreme dryness associated with conditions like eczema. Just like its use on the face, it only takes a small amount to make an impact. The best way to use it is to massage it all over, immediately after showering.

Argan Oil is equally amazing for your hair. Split ends, brittle hair, dry scalp, and even dandruff are no match for the restorative power in this natural product. Again, the nutrients (like vitamin E and fatty acids) work to repair your hair, add moisture, and increase strength and elasticity. The key to using Argan Oil for your hair is to be consistent. Some people will apply a small amount of oil to their hair after washing it, whereas others will apply it, wrap their hair in a towel for about half an hour – or even leave it over night – and then shampoo it out. Either way, the benefits are the same: healthier, stronger, smoother hair.

There’s a reason it has been used for so long all over the world. For truly healthy skin and hair, it’s one of the products I trust because I love the benefits of Argan Oil.  If you can find it pure, it sure makes a great salad dressing.

Seabuckthorn Oil Benefits

seabuckthorn oil benefits

For centuries women have been enhancing their natural beauty- with the skin being one of their major objectives. For women interested in natural beauty there is a powerful modern vitamin which is considered a superfood that is recognized around the world for its many benefits to the skin, hair and nails.

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides) oil is considered an anti-ageing and medicinal skin care product and can be taken in dietary supplement to nourish the woman’s skin, revitalizing it and restoring it to its natural balance.

The omega 9 oil is extracted through the CO2 extraction process from the pulp of the berries. It is then processed and added to many skin care products of leading brands and manufacturers, as well as doctor-approved lines. Aside from enhancing and rejuvenating the skin, the oil is used to help clear skin injuries such as burns, eczema, wounds, sores and to help improve the condition of the mucous membranes including erosions, ulcers and lesion.

For the woman wishing to diminish the signs of aging or the woman wishing to maintain her youthful glow, Sea Buckthorn oil is used to combat wrinkles, dryness and various symptoms suffered with malnourished or prematurely aging skin. You can use this inside out, meaning taking a supplement as well as putting the oil on your skin to combat dryness and wrinkles.

The benefits of the oil do not stop at the skin. It is an all around beauty oil that also conditions the hair and nails as well. For the hair, it may stimulate hair growth. It is applied onto your dry hair and massaged into the scalp leaving on for 30 minutes.

There are several countries around the world that have found this product to be one of the best for cosmetic beautifying. Women deserve such a product for great looking skin even through aging. The ability of Seabuckthorn oil to absorb UV rays has also become quite popular in sun block (trying putting this on a small area to see how it works for you before giving up your sunscreen), which is great for women who are looking to tan healthy and with natural products to protect their skin. The oil also possesses benefits to help prevent cardiovascular disease, as it reduces blood fat levels. Sea Buckthorn oil is also an excellent source of vitamin C which aids in support of the immune system and is a good source of vitamin A which aids in keeping the skin, eyes and bones healthy.

I take/use my seabuckthorn oil everyday for the benefits, you should try it!

MSM for Hair Growth

MSM for Hair GrowthWhat is MSM?  Why is MSM, so good for your hair, skin & nails?

Not to be mistaken for MSN, the out dated messager service. MSM is actually Methysulfonylmethane (Jones, “Supplement.”) which is comprised of organic Sulfonyl Sulfur. This Sulfonyl Sulfur and is found in all living things. In fact it is the 3rd largest chemical in our bodies (Shelton, “MSM”).

It has many applications and was originally developed to treat join pain (great if you workout a lot), and arthritis pain. However, researchers discovered that it had another application that could be used, that would set the beauty and health world on fire. It gave people better looking skin, longer hair and stronger nails by helping them to generate healthier cells within their bodies. When these super glam cells die they become our hair, nails and skin. Making us glow with beautiful radiance.

Researchers started to notice that the Keratin in the Sulfur helped regulate our natural body chemistry.  This gives you a healthier glow and radiance (“MSM”), and help you hair grow stronger and faster.

MSM is broken down into a white, odourless, crystal substance that does taste quite bitter, do not try it in smoothies or yogurt. This crystallized substance is made into a food supplement.  Due to how our food is prepared much of the Sulfur is removed through cooking and preserving. By taking an MSM supplement we help to replace the natural Sulfur that is lost in our modern food (“MSM”).

Now before you grab your favorite handbag, and toss on a pair of your favorite pumps to go out and get a bottle of MSM supplement I encourage you to read the follow. There are some website that claims MSM supplements have no side effects. This is true as long as the MSM supplements are pure and do not have any additives. According to WebMD, some of these side effects are worsening of allergy symptoms, upset stomach and headache and even include serious effects such as swallowing and itching of the throat if it is not in its pure form. It is best if you take the time to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking these supplements if you have not tried them before.

Now you know what MSM is and why it is a beauty supplement for hair growth, strong nails and glowing skin!
