Benefits of Kelp

Benefits of KelpKelp A True Superfood

How many times have you untangled yourself from seaweed that has washed up on shore and wrapped itself around your feet? This intrusive, slimy sea life is one of the highest sources of vitamins and minerals (including 12 minerals and 60 trace elements) on the planet. Kelp, a seaweed that gets its nutrients from seawater, offers an abundant source of vitamins and minerals such as the iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron required to promote healthy hair and skin.

Kelp is valued for its naturally high iodine content, which helps the functioning of the thyroid gland. It is essential in the formation of thyroid hormones, which regulate the body’s energy production, promote growth and development, and help burn excess fat.

A truly natural food sources of iodine. Kelp supplements are a good alternative if you do not get enough of these foods in your daily diet. Thyroid disease is related to iodine deficiency. However, in the US and most developed countries, iodine deficiency is rare; and because thyroids are extremely sensitive to iodine, you must avoid taking too much kelp.

People who eat excessive amounts of raw cabbage or nuts (which reduce the body’s uptake of iodine) may
find supplements useful if their iodine intake remains otherwise low. Deficiencies can be treated with 150 micrograms of iodine daily. Prolonged use of large amounts of iodine (6 mg or more daily) may suppress activity of the thyroid gland. A safe upper limit of iodine is 1,000 micrograms per day. I would recommend working with a naturopath doctor if this is the case and using a natural source like kelp to get your iodine.

In a seaweed face mask however iodine can do wonders for your skin. Iodine helps to draw out impurities and balance the moisture in the skin. Negatively charged ions act like magnets drawing out the impurities in your skin. And all the skin-nourishing vitamins discussed earlier are present in high concentrations, including the B-complexes. Seaweed is notably high in B12, a vitamin harder to obtain in land plant food. B12 plays a role in the synthesis of those important nucleic acids and the health of your skin and hair. Everything you need to purify, detoxify, tone, moisturize, revitalize, and oxygenate your skin is present in this super algae.

Try some kelp noodles today or a beautiful seaweed face mask.

Discover Which Foods Can Age You Years

Foods That Age YouYou are what you eat, and certain foods definitely make you look better than others. Your body literally rebuilds itself on a regular basis using the foods that you eat. Giving your body processed foods and high fructose corn syrup to work with is like trying to build a house with straw—it will not look very good and it does not take much to blow it down.

If you want to look radiant and hold back the wrinkles, then you need to eat food that your body can work with. It is not all about what you put on your face; it is what you put in your body that is most important. That is the big secret that women who look as sexy when they are fifty as they did when they were thirty understand.

Here is the best news of all: changing your diet to fill up your body with anti-aging foods is not all that expensive. All you need to do is make some smart choices and know a little science.

What causes you to get wrinkles in the first place? The biggest culprits are sugar, chemicals, and unhealthy fats. When sugar breaks down in the body, it creates free radicals and advanced glycation that literally targets and destroys the amino acids that keep your face looking good.

The older you get, the fewer amino acids your body has to work with. The fewer amino acids, the less radiant, smooth and all around amazing your skin becomes.

The problem is that most of our food today is filled with sugar—especially really bad sugar that accelerates this process dramatically. That is the bad news. And it is bad news, because it is so hard to avoid these foods.

Here’s the good news: certain antioxidants and nutrients can counter these sneaky free radicals. How? By supporting those very amino acids that make your face look so fabulous.
Cutting out the sugars, fillers, and bad fats that age your skin and filling yourself up with antioxidants and nutrients that slow down and even reverse the aging process is the key to keeping up a youthful look. That’s why superfoods are so important to slow down the aging process, they are filled with everything  your body and beauty loves.

Cure Dark Circles Under Eyes With Vitamin K?

Cure Dark Circles Under EyesVitamin K Benefits & Sources

Vitamin K moved from obscurity to become the ‘in’ Vitamin A few years ago when it was widely reported that it could accomplish the holy grail of beauty tips – that is, reduce black circles under the eyes! Hurray, we cheered. But before long, it slipped back into obscurity. It is time to put it back on your shopping list. If you lack sleep, it will show on your face. Even the best concealer may not be able to hide those haunting black circles.

Vitamin K goes to work on dark circles by suppressing pigmentation and helping to prevent blood from clotting. Those who are into that pale look have discovered another secret of Vitamin K. Shhh! By suppressing pigmentation, it can help produce whiter skin. Seeking a porcelain doll look, though, you can get too much of a good thing, go easy follow the recommended dosage if you are taking a supplement. Given the important role of the melanin in pigmentation in protecting your skin from the sun, the guidance of a natural doctor is suggested.

There are many more reasons why you should restock Vitamin K. It’s also good for the bones and may help keep osteoporosis at bay. If you are short on Vitamin K, you are at a higher risk of a hip fracture and more frail bones in general. For skin health, Vitamin K has been shown to accelerate the healing of skin irritations. It has even been applied to the redness that results from laser treatments. So be sure to add this all around beauty vitamin to your diet.

Foods high in Vitamin K include:
•    Dark leafy greens (mustards, spinach, kale)
•    Broccoli
•    Asparagus
•    Brussels sprouts
•    Spring onions
•    Spices (chili powder, cayenne, curry, paprika)
•    Herbs (thyme, basil, sage, coriander, oregano)
•    Prunes

A Vitamin K deficiency can result in a thinning of the blood and lead to stroke and other illnesses.

So why not try to add some Vitamin K rich foods to your diet and perhaps watch those dark circles under your eyes disappear. Lookout for spinach and kale in one of our new formulas, Femina, coming out soon!

Soft Skin DIY Avocado Face Mask

Try this Avocado mask to instantly moisturize your skin:

1. Blend or mash one half of a avocado.

2. Add 1 teaspoon EACH of flaxseed or coconut oil and honey.

3. Mix together until smooth
and creamy.

4. Apply to face and let sit for 15-20 minutes.

5. Rinse clean with warm water. Tone and moisturize.

The Avocado’s high fat content is equally beneficial when ingested. To energize your day, add half an Avocado to a blender with nut milk, dates and frozen berries to make a creamy, nutty-flavored morning smoothie. Avocado is
low in saturated fatty acids associated with the ‘bad’ cholesterol LDL and higher in monosaturated fats. When added to a salad, the fat in the avocado helps to boost the overall absorption of fat-soluble carotenoids in a salad. Avocado is a good source of the essential Omega-3 fatty acids, which support cognitive functioning, anti-aging and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer, arthritis).

Are You Reaping the Beautiful Benefits of Magnesium?

Magnesium BenefitsMagnesium Salt Baths
Rejuvenate You!

In the search for internal youth, this mineral is holding its own. Magnesium is showing up in a plethora of anti-aging and other beauty products. Beauty product promoters claim their Magnesium products support circulation, an important function in the rejuvenating process of cells, and help to maintain the skin’s elasticity and moisture. Can Magnesium really do all this and help you preserve your youthful looks? The answer is, yes. One Swedish study found that bathing in Dead Sea salts for only 15 minutes improved skin barrier function, enhanced skin hydration, and reduced inflammation.

Plus … you guessed right, Magnesium is the second secret to a beautiful smile! Fifty percent of the Magnesium in the body is in your bones. Recent studies show that an increase in Magnesium leads to an increase in bone density. This mean that, like Calcium, Magnesium plays a role in preventing osteoporosis. Athletes know the benefits of Magnesium to prevent muscles from cramping and excess Calcium from getting into the cells. Magnesium’s role in supporting a strong skeletal system helps to support firmer skin. So if you want to preserve your beautiful high cheekbones, up your intake of Calcium and Magnesium, as well as Vitamin D to help your body process these minerals.

This powerful mineral plays a role in the health of all living cells and helps in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It can increase the efficiency of the heart and help prevent heart attacks, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, asthma, and kidney stones. It also helps to reduce diabetes and insulin resistance. Proper doses of Magnesium will help you feel balanced and energized.

This important mineral is one of the most abundant elements on the earth yet many people are lacking in Magnesium and do not get enough from food. In the United States where food is enriched, many women get only about 75% of the recommended RDA while as many as 50% fall below 70 percent, according to a survey by the USDA. Magnesium salts are the main mineral in Dead Sea water but you do not have to travel to the Middle East to get your daily fill of this important mineral.

Magnesium is easy to find in food—it is the main ion used in the formation of chlorophyll, the green substance in plants that lets them turn light into energy. A plate of fresh, green spinach is a good place to start. Other greens high in Magnesium include artichoke, broccoli, and peas. Beans, nuts, seeds, and potatoes serve up a serving of Magnesium. As always, choose unprocessed grains that have maintained their Magnesium content— buckwheat flour, oat bran, whole wheat flour, and brown rice are high in Magnesium.

Magnesium for a Good Night’s Sleep

Do you know that your body is busy performing biological maintenance while you sleep? There’s a reason why it’s referred to as “beauty sleep”. Getting enough sleep is important to give the body an opportunity to rest, rejuvenate, and heal. This overnight tune-up definitely shows in your skin’s appearance. If you are tired, it’ll be evident in your face as your wrinkles become more pronounced and your facial muscles sag. In addition to a
little symptom we call “emotional imbalance” and reduced concentration, there are many physical effects from a lack of sleep, including reduced immunity, weight gain, and an increased risk of heart disease. Definitely good reasons to recharge your batteries by getting enough sleep.

If you have trouble falling asleep, Magnesium works very well when taken with Calcium to naturally lower blood pressure. For a great night’s sleep, it is an excellent supplement to take about an hour before bed. Low Magnesium has been shown to play a role in chronic fatigue syndrome. Increasing the intake of Magnesium to restore Magnesium levels to normal.

De-stressing Your Body

The relaxing effects of Magnesium make it a great sleep inducer. These same benefits can also help you de- stress. Magnesium’s relaxation effects are recognized in both traditional and alternative medicine. Magnesium relaxes all the muscles including the heart, prevents cramping, and facilitates sleep. Many natural medicine doctors use Magnesium in therapeutic doses to smooth out abnormal heart rhythms and stop asthma attacks. Emergency rooms administer Magnesium after a heart attack. The bottom line is that Magnesium saves lives so make sure you get enough every single day. If you have any health problems please contact a practitioner before self treating.

Why Chlorella is a Must Have Superfood

chlorella benefitsChlorella Benefits

One of the most important super foods is Chlorella, a microscopic green freshwater plant with a concentrated supply of 20 different vitamins, minerals, protein, and other health and skin nutritional benefits. It provides one of the highest natural sources of chlorophyll and also contains iron, iodine, Zinc, lysine, and Essential Fatty Acids.

Chlorella is 60% protein and contains 19 amino acids (including the 8 essential amino acids). With more Beta Carotene than carrots, and chock full of vitamins and minerals, it may be the most powerful super food.

This microalgae is a pure, whole, natural food that can be taken safely on a daily basis. Chlorella causes the good bacteria in the stomach to multiply and therefore improves digestion and the assimilation of nutrients. An added bonus is Chlorella rejuvenates and reproduces its own cells with the highest natural sources of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA. Both are involved in cellular repair and growth. As we age, the amount of nucleic acids in our body declines. Chlorella replenishes them, helping you to both look and feel younger and healthier.

Chlorella provides a natural heavy metal detox. As many as 23 heavy metals may be circulating in your body, including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead. Chlorella will bind to these metals and other toxins but it’ll take at least three months to clear the metal from the system, depending on the daily Chlorella dosage. It truly is an amazing super food that can be beneficial to everyone.

Initially, you will notice improvements in digestion, the elimination of bad breath, and a clearing of constipation. As toxins are gradually removed from the system, your skin will look healthier and the body will start to function properly, and with a noticeable increase in energy.

Beautiful Benefits of Maqui Berry

Benefits of Maqui Berry

Hello, Beauties!

Lo and behold, we have found another super food that makes us smile and  glow.  I want to talk to you about the benefits of the Maqui berry.  We here are BeautyBlenz know our superfoods inside out and always when we hear of something new, we test it out before we pass on the beautiful benefits to you.  We love the Maqui Berry benefits! Now, sometimes, we aren’t as good at the pronunciation. I heard about this berry, and our team went to work – not only to find out about all its benefits, but to find the best and purest, raw, non-gmo, organic source.  The problem was I kept saying MaKaw berry, and my potential suppliers kept thinking I meant “maca” or perhaps was doing a bad parrot imitation. Just between you and me, it is pronounced MaKey Berry, but you may have figured that out already. I was just trying to make it sound more exotic 😉

All joking aside, this amazing little purple berry packs a beautiful nutritious punch.  Maqui has been used by the Mapuche Indians (who have been known for beautiful skin and a long life span) for centuries in healing.   They used to make a tonic from the berries that gave them vitality, strength and stamina for battles. This berry comes from the Patagonia region of South America. It’s not new, but it is new to the super food market. This amazing little berry has been rated as having one of the highest amounts of antioxidant ratios in the world. Wow!  It has even been said that this little fruit has 150% more polyphenols and 300% more anthocyanin than almost any other super food!  The bush on which the Maqui berries grow symbolizes health, healing and strength. We all could benefit from that!

Maqui berries are loaded with anthocyanin, polyphenols and bioflavonoids, which can guard our bodies from damaging free radicals. Anthocyanin is simply the compound that give these beautiful berries their deep purple color, but how does it help you?  Anthocyanin has a lot of healing benefits: it destroys damaging enzymes that can destroy tissue, boosts metabolism (thermogenic), promotes anti-aging and cardiovascular health, is an anti-inflammatory, balances blood sugar, increases energy, helps strengthen your immune system, clears up skin, helps cellular and tissue regeneration and repairs protein damage in the blood vessel walls. That is why it is a superfood.

Lookout for Maqui Berry in our two new formulas: Cogito and Femina.

The Beauty Benefits of Schizandra Berries

Beauty Benefits of Schizandra Berries

I must say here at BeautyBlenz, we partake in testing a lot of super foods. Some make the cut and some don’t.  One of our very favorite super foods is the Schizandra berry.  This berry has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and is becoming more and more mainstream, which is not always a positive thing.  The more demand grows, the more people grow the berries with low quality standards, including using pesticides and high heat processing which kills all the vital nutrients.  You will be pleased to hear all the Schizandra berries we use in our products are raw, sun-dried and organic. You get all the nutrients and benefits without their being overridden by harmful pesticides and high heat processing.

Schizandra berries are well-known for beautifying the skin, giving you longevity and energy, as well as replenishing your qi (which is translated to life-force or breath).  Even Dr. Oz stands behind the healing power of these berries.

Here is a quick summary of the beautiful benefits of Schizandra berries:

•    They help to gently cleanse your liver and blood. (Beware of other liver cleansing herbs that are too strong, quickly dumping a lot of toxins into your blood stream resulting in hives or flu-like symptoms.)
•    They are an adaptogen, which helps your body adapt to the stresses of life, giving you a gentle boost when you need it and enhancing concentration or helping calm you if you are over stimulated.  They are very loving to your central nervous system.
•    They help your skin retain moisture, giving you a radiant skin tone while maintaining moisture and helping protect against and repair UV damage.  They also improve skin tone.
•    They nourish your overall body and organs like the liver, kidneys, heart and brain.

Schizandra berries are one of the few foods that incorporate the five tastes: pungent, sour, sweet, bitter and salty, which is a key basis in traditional Chinese medicine and is the translated meaning of Wu Wei Zi, the Chinese name for Schizandra berries.  Each taste supports a different healing property, making Schizandra berries one of the most balanced super foods for health and beauty!

How can I try the amazing benefits of Schizandra berries? Try our formula for Hair, Skin & Nails – Bloom or Radiance Tea!

Simple Ways How To Improve Your Skin

How To improve Skin

Whether you have been blessed with perfect skin from birth or you are one of us that has to work at it a bit harder, there is always a bit of room for improvement, even if you can’t see it.  Did you know that your skin is your largest organ?  Anyway, fun facts aside, here are some simple ways you can get your glow going:

1.  Have a solid skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice a day.  Exfoliate your skin about twice a week, and give yourself a facial with a product like Mudpack once a week.  You can also whip up some pretty cool facials at home. Check out my Facebook page for lots of recipes!

2. Fat, lots of fat.  Yes that’s right. Forget almost everything people have told you about fat.  If you want irresistibly  soft skin that doesn’t wrinkle up like a raisin as you get older, you need to get your healthy fats, like the Omega 3 fatty acids in walnuts, hemp, flax oil, Acai, sachi inchi oil, pumpkin seeds and sea buckthorn.  This type of fat will not make you fat, I promise.  (Okay, unless you are eating buckets a day. But you wouldn’t do that, right??)

3.  Local superfoods. Yes, lots of superfoods.  Now not all super foods are exotic. Some of them you can even find at your grocery store, like kale, spinach, berries, artichokes, ginger, turmeric, lemons and so much more! These goodies are filled with skin-loving vitamins like A & C to keep your skin young!  If you don’t already enjoy these wonders, try picking up a new fruit or vegetable every time you go grocery shopping. Try to eat a rainbow of colored fruits and vegetables for beautiful skin!

4.  Exotic superfoods!  These babies are jam-packed full of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fats, even more so than our normal local superfoods. They come from all over the world and grow in some pretty tough to find places, so we can’t get them fresh, but always look for them: organic or pesticide-free, raw or freeze-dried and non-gmo.  Super foods have come a long way in the past few years and are being regularly farmed. Just because it’s a superfood doesn’t mean it’s not covered in pesticides or dried at a high heat that kills all the nutrients, which won’t do you or your skin any good.  Fountain of Youth Super Food powder is top of the line; it gives you the chance to get 15 raw super foods in one formula. Pretty cool!

See super simple ways to improve your skin and look even more beautiful than you already are!

Benefits of Steaming Your Face

Benefits of Face Steaming

If you have ever had the pleasure of a great spa facial, then you may already know the benefits of steaming your face!  Or perhaps you’re a regular visitor to the steam room. Often we know that these things are good for us, but we are not sure why. So, for those who aren’t sure of the benefits, this is for you.

First, let’s cover the benefits of steaming your face:

  •  A good steam helps loosen and remove the dirt and dead skin cells lurking beneath the surface of your skin that normal face washing cannot reach! It also helps to get rid of nasty blackheads and makes whitehead removal easier.
  • It encourages skin renewal, helping you to shed old skin cells to reveal a more vibrant, glowing skin. Additionally, it helps skincare products, such as serums and moisturizers, to absorb more deeply. A good steam increases oxygen flow and circulation to your face, helping new, healthy skin cells to grow.
  • Using an herbal blend like Steam in your hot water dramatically enhances the benefits of a steam by delivering the wonderful benefits of the herbs deeply into your skin for a complete and blissful skin rejuvenation. It relaxes and refreshes as you cleanse.

Now that you know the benefits of steaming, you are probably wondering how you do it.  It’s really quite simple. Just place hot water (be careful that it’s not too hot) into a bowl, drape a towel over your shoulder, hold your face above the water and relax for about 8 minutes.  Always cleanse and gently exfoliate before steaming, and then it’s ideal to use a face mask like Mudpack as a complete treatment to spoil your skin beautiful.
