Although it’s true that in order to get the flat, washboard stomach of your dreams you may have to change your diet, you don’t have to starve yourself and eat nothing but a small celery stick three times a day. In fact, there are some foods out there that will actually help you on your way to a flat stomach and banish the belly bloat.

Eating less is a good way to lose weight-however starving your body will only make it store fat more efficiently. Your best bet is to eat a varied diet (a vegetarian or vegan diet is the absolute best way to a trim, toned physique), and exercise well and include some of the following flat stomach foods to bring out the body of your dreams. Plus, you may start to feel lethargic and unwell. After all, our energy level and overall health reflects what’s going on inside of us. If you load up on fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods, your skin will reflect this by being blemish-free, and you’ll feel great!

You’ve probably heard of the 5-a-Day rule but how about the Rainbow diet rule? This is a new dietary regime that focuses on the different colors of food and how they can have an effect on your wellbeing (there’s even science to back it up!).

It’s probably not a spoiler to tell you that fruits and vegetables are good for us. After all, they contain a huge array of nutrients and vitamins that are essential in keeping your body healthy; and their functions are many and varied. There are nutrients that keep your eyes healthy and bright, some that keep your joints and bones healthy, nutrients to keep the skin looking young, and supple—the list goes on!

The great news is that the effect of differently-coloured foods on the body is now being investigated to see if certain pigments can help with the fight against disease and aging. My Review of Miracle Clay

Montmorillonite Clay BenefitsIt’s time for another product review, can I get a woot woot? Recently I made the acquaintance of Vlad, the owner of Miracle Clay. He was a generous supporter of the SkinCandyVitamins celebration contest giveaway. I was lucky enough to be asked to test out some of their products; who could turn that offer down?

Although I love trying new products, I’m always a bit cautious because I have very picky skin. I don’t find most products I try to be noteworthy or worth the cash. So I let Vlad know right away that I’d be more then happy to give them a try but if I didn’t like them, I couldn’t possibly write about them. Well here we are so something must have gone right!

The entire line of Miracle Clay products is chemical-free, paraben-free, and vegan. That makes me happy inside. It’s based on a clay called Calcium Montmorillonite Clay, which was originally found in the Amazon rainforest. It’s a healing clay that has been used for centuries to heal the body both inside and out. When you ingest this clay, it helps keep your colon happy and helps your body detox all the bad stuff while giving you back valuable minerals—over 60 to be exact. A clay that helps to keep your body healthy, how cool is that? Your body will thank you!

So, that takes care of your insides. I can hear you asking, “what can it do externally for my skin?” It delivers nutrients and minerals directly to your skin, which can help with anti-aging and beautiful radiance. It also helps keep your skin clear, smooth, and soft while removing impurities and dead skin cells. No chemicals at all, just good minerals. That’s exactly the kind of makeup and cleanser line that I like. It’s natural and nourishing. Plus, this line is very moisturizing so it will also help to prevent wrinkles as well.

First let me straight off that I did like all the products. I can’t wait to try more ant-aging products. The body/face cream called Moisture Intense and the hydrating cream were thick and rich but didn’t clog my pores like a lot of rich creams do. They absorbed quickly and easily, leaving my skin soft with a subtle sheen. It was gorgeous.

The lip balm is a must try and I love to mix it with a bit of lipstick for a nice sheer sheen. It helps to keep my lips super kissable and soft.

One of the hardest things to buy is eye cream. I usually just make my own because I find most products just don’t do what they claim. Plus, eye creams tend to be both too expensive and laden with chemicals or they’re just too light to do much of anything. I prefer eye creams that are rich but absorb well and the Miracle Clay eye cream totally hit my sweet spot. You can see it in the picture—it’s nice and rich, absorbs well, and a little goes a long way. I have been using this eye cream for over a month and I have so much left. It’s great value for your money.

Now hands-down my two stand-out favorite products are the face wash and the clay face mask.

First, let me tell you about the face wash. The cleanser is gentle but has tiny exfoliating beads. It helps cell turn over with the gentle exfoliation and has no problem getting every last trace of my makeup off without drying my skin out. It doesn’t leave your face feeling stripped and too dry after use like some other cleansers. Instead, my skin is soft and happy every time. I don’t wear mascara but I do wear flower-based eye shadows and natural eyeliner— the cleanser wipes it away with no problems.

My second favorite is the clay mask. If you follow me on a regular basis, you know I normally make all my own face masks. When I try pre-packaged ones, I have very low expectations to say the least. I make some pretty powerful and active face masks that really help my skin. So come on, clay…clay is clay is clay and that is most basic face mask you can get. Really what could it do, minerals or no minerals? Well, just putting it on my face proved these minerals are powerful and active, my skin had a visual glow after and I used it up pretty quickly and will be ordering more! I really can’t say enough about the face mask. If you’re looking for radiant skin and, like me, didn’t think it could be found in a branded mask, you absolutely have to give the Miracle Clay Face Mask a try.

How To Get Rid Of Age SpotsYou eat right, exercise regularly, and have a great skincare routine but you have the dreaded spots. You know what I mean. Those spots can be left over acne scars or related to age. Been there, done that and have the t-shirt to prove it… I had acne in my teens and a bad bout in my early twenties (how unfair is that?) that left me with some of those spots, plus I did my fair share of sun worshipping thorough the years. Depending on your skin type, the spots may never completely go away but you can certainly convince them to fade a little. Now if you have dark patches on your skin, that could be hormonal and is called melasma. I’ll cover that in another post.

Now I know you have heard this before: don’t pick, squeeze, or irritate acne because it can leave permanent scars and spots on your skin. Avoid temptation and leave it alone to heal. On the aging side, all I can say is use sunscreen, all the time! And if you’re using anti-aging products with Retinol, use even more sunscreen since it can make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

Skin renewal is key to getting your spots to go away. Or to get them to at least do a slow fade so they’re less noticeable. Here are some tips:

• Exfoliate your skin 3 times a week
• Use fruit peels 1–2 time a week
• Put lemon juice on the spots and leave it on for about 10 minutes, then rinse
• Use a homemade Vitamin C serum on your face
• Juice an onion, really. For an onion and honey mask, use 1 tablespoon of each, leave on for about 20 minutes, and then rinse.

Now let’s chat a bit more about Vitamin C. This is a must-have in your beauty arsenal, just because is it imperative internally since by eating a lot of fruits and veggies, you keep your skin young and vibrant. Vitamin C also has the same effects when used topically. It helps fade spots, brightens your skin, reduces wrinkles, and provides a small amount of UV protection—although it is absolutely not a substitute for good sunscreen.

So here’s my favorite recipe from Skinace:

VITAMIN C SERUM (10%)

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants for anti-aging but can lose its power after sitting on the shelf for awhile. You need to make new batches on a regular basis so it stays fresh and potent. Using a dark bottle will also help your serum stay potent longer.

“Ingredients:

½ teaspoon l-ascorbic acid powder
3½ teaspoon distilled water (bottled water is fine, should be at room temperature)
1½ teaspoon vegetable glycerin
1 amber or dark blue glass bottle

Instructions:

Make sure your glass bottle is sterile by boiling it in some hot water. You can also sterilize it with some rubbing alcohol.
Wait for the bottle to cool and dry completely.
Add the l-ascorbic acid to the bottle.
Add the distilled water.
Swish around the bottle or use a stirrer until all the l-ascorbic acid is totally dissolved.
Add the propylene glycol or glycerin (must be vegetable glycerin, however you can use Monistat Anti-Chafing gel if your skin is fine with silicones)
Mix well (cap the bottle and keep shaking until everything is blended or use a stirrer) and use up as early as possible.”

What is oil pulling?

Are you thinking of oil rigs and other major equipment? Nope, I’m talking about another beauty trick. Yes, it’s hard to imagine what I’m talking about, isn’t it?

Oil pulling is a ancient Ayurvedic healing remedy that involves swishing oil around your mouth. Traditionally sesame or sunflower oil is used but some people prefer to use coconut or olive oil. The big question is why, isn’t it? Oil pulling is done for healing, detoxing your body, healing your skin, and overall rejuvenation.

Quite a few years ago I met this girl, Laura, and she just literally glowed, from the inside out. We became friends and I asked what her secret was because, frankly, she was a bit of a party girl and was a bit lax in her diet. She told me all about oil pulling and I couldn’t believe it. It sounded like it could literally cure anything and give you the skin you always dreamed of. Right away, I was off to buy a bottle of the best, cold-pressed organic sesame oil I could find.

How To Oil Pull

First you want to make sure your mouth is absolutely immaculate. Do this before you eat. Brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, rinse your mouth with warm water—the works!

Measure out a tablespoon of the oil of your choice, put it in your mouth, and close—but do not swallow!

Put your head back to ensure that the oil coats your entire mouth and back molars. Slowly sip and suck the oil through your teeth, back and forth, working it through all the 32 gaps through your teeth, back of your throat, sides of your mouth (ear to ear). You do this for about 20 minutes. Don’t gargle, even if you get really bored. Try watching TV, meditating, relaxing or reading while you move the oil around.

Then you spit it out. Don’t be alarmed when oil becomes white and watery.

Rinse out your mouth with water and brush your teeth again.

You also want to drink a few glasses of water, which you should be doing regularly anyway, right?

I religiously practiced this for about 6 months but, to be absolutely honest, I didn’t notice anything, I did not feel any better or see any difference in my skin so I gave it up. But just because we don’t see things for the outside, doesn’t always mean there isn’t something good going on in the inside. This just wasn’t for me, I am not particularly toxic as I lead a pretty health lifestyle :) So what are some of the more specific benefits of oil pulling?

Benefits of Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is supposed to help alleviate skin conditions like acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation, scars, rashes, etc. It is also supposed to help allergies, asthma, digestion, headaches, colds, bronchitis, gingivitis, gum disease, candida, whiten teeth, halitosis, constipation, diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, obesity, remove toxins from your body, relieve joint pain, and female reproductive problems.

So, how does it do this? The belief is that oil pulling stimulates and supports the healing system of the body in curing all diseases.

Side Effects of Oil Pulling

If you do decide to try this and feel flu-like symptoms for the first week, this is normal as your body pulls out toxins.
It is believed that organ meridians are present in the tongue, just as they are in other key points in your body such as your hands, feet, and ears. That makes that the tongue is important for diagnosis of disease and that taking care of your tongue is an important part of both preventing and treating illness.

Now, before you start, make sure your fillings are not loose. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll lose one but if you already have loose fillings, it is a possibility.

Now, about acne. I know, didn’t I just say it’s suppose to help acne? But all that pulling out of toxins from your body can cause you to get more acne. Go figure. Usually it will clear up but sometimes it can aggravate acne problems further.

It can also aggravate your sinuses.

I have known a lot of people affected with rosacea. If you suffer from rosacea, I hope this post can help give you some much-needed relief.

First lets discuss what it is for those who haven’t come across it before. Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness to the face because the blood vessels become enlarged beneath the skin. How common? Over 12 million Americans are affected by it.

Other symptoms of rosacea include red bumps on your forehead, cheeks, nose, and/or chin; visible blood vessels on your nose or cheeks; and/or a tendency to flush or blush. Rosacea can also result in a red bulbous nose (doesn’t sound fun, does it?) or a burning sensation in your eyes. Now that we have that unpleasant list out of the way, lets talk about some natural remedies that you can use to combat rosacea.

First, some basics:
• Try to avoid over-exposure to the sun.
• Keep your stress levels low. Yes, I know it’s not easy.
• Put the alcohol down!
• Kibosh on the spicy foods
• Avoid cold weather, harsh face exfoliants or scrubs, saunas, really hot showers or water, chemical-laden make-up and corticosteriods since they can aggravate rosacea.
• Eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and gluten-free products like buckwheat and quinoa. Of course, you’re already doing that, right?
• Avoid processed foods. Cut out the icky trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup, and sugar.
• Eat your dark leafy greens and whole grains. They have natural anti-inflammatories like vitamin B.
• Get your essential fatty acids, like flax and hemp oil, that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
• Incorporate meditation and yoga into your lifestyle. It’ll help with that low-stress thing, trust me.
• Make sure your pillowcase is washed regularly as that can also irritate your skin even more.

Rosacea can also be a byproduct of food allergies so it may be worth your while to go and get tested. After all, if you can avoid the problem by avoiding a certain food, it’ll make dealing with the rosacea that much easier. Common allergens like dairy, gluten, and peanuts can be triggers.

Second whether you make your own moisturizer or buy one, look out for these ingredients: vitamin B3; niacinamide (also great for anti-aging and hyperpigmentation, it will give you a glow); azelaic acid contrived from barely, wheat and rye (it will diminish the redness and take care of the bumps).

There are some other ways to calm and soothe the redness. You can apply lavender (try some oil on a cottonball and massage it in), feverfew (reduces inflammation), or camphor oil to the affected areas. The camphor especially is known to have soothing analgesic and antimicrobial effects. You can also try licorice gel twice a day on the area of the outbreak or tea tree oil for antiseptic and anit-inflammatory action.

Try putting green tea (which may help with the sun sensitivity) or chamomile tea bags on your face or, if you’re on the go, make a spritz out of the tea to spray on your face when needed. If you have a little time at home, rub oatmeal onto your face to soothe, cleanse, and moisturize. It will also help to reduce irritation, inflammation, and itchiness. If your face feels burny, try a chamomile cold compress. Just dip a cotton cloth into cold chamomile tea and hold it to the area. Definitely worth keeping some cold tea brewed and ready in the fridge.

Just so you know, all herbal remedies I’ve mentioned are meant to be taken topically. Unfortunately, some can even aggravate rosacea so start slow and do patch tests to see how your skin reacts. Be patient. If one of the natural remedies doesn’t work for you, try the next on the list. Nature has lots of ways to help us look and feel fabulous, we just have to find the one that’s right for our own body.

how to protect your skinBeautiful, glorious sun! Depending on where you live, you could be seeing it peeking out from behind the clouds for the first time in months. Expose a little skin and suck in that vitamin D, people! It helps keep you healthy and no pill can replace getting your vitamins the natural way.

That being said, do not, and I mean DO NOT, go out and get a sunburn. Yes, I know that you know about the dangers of skin cancer. But also consider that prolonged exposure to the sun can speed up the signs of aging. I know that sunbeam isn’t worth ten wrinkles. Here’s what you need to do:
•  Wear  natural sunblock (look for zinc oxide & titanium dioxide, which are milled from minerals)
• Reapply sunscreen after swimming or exercising outdoors
• Avoid lots of sun exposure between 10 a.m. & 3 p.m. when the sun is the hottest
•    Put on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face
•    Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes from damage
•    Be especially careful if you’re using anti-aging products since many of them can make your skin more vulnerable to the sun’s rays, especially products that use Retinol. Up your sunscreen’s protection level just to be safe.

In addition to using sunblock, naturally protect skin from within by eating a good wholefood diet, with plenty of brightly colored vegetables and fruits, which are naturally protective. Drink plenty of pure water especially in the hot weather, to prevent the skin from getting dehydrated.
